Delhi is used to renewing without destroying itself - there have been at least seven cities of Delhi, going back to the eleventh century and remnants of all of them remain scattered around the city. These include not only famous old monuments like the Qutb Minar or the Lodhi Tombs, but anonymous mausoleums, small mosques, pavilions, wells, city gates, and walls. Delhi has so often risen from its own ashes that when Lutyens’ imperial new city was newly completed in the 1930s the general comment was, “What fine ruins they will make.” Delhi however, has preserved itself, or its many selves among the successive tides of its own past.
