Ajoy Bhawan - 1969

Although the drawings date from 1969-70, the Communist Party of India (CPI) commissioned AAJ nearly 10 years earlier for a party headquarters building on a site different from that on which the building currently stands.

The external aesthetic of the building is necessarily austere in deference to the security-conscious client.  The jaalis and deeply recessed windows are there for security purposes.  The architectural language is very much of its time.

Grit Finish Texture

Contemporary, uncluttered forms and an interplay of brick or red ‘bajri’ (grit texture) finished panels are punctuated by regularly spaced window openings. This is probably the first time that the firm used bajri finish on the facade.

Sculptural & Artistic Qualities

There was often a sculptural quality to individual elements in buildings. This spiral staircase is an example of some of the innovative designs AAJ incorporated in their buildings.
