Yashwanth Place - 1965
NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) allotted four projects to private architects. AAJ was commissioned to design and construct the shopping complex and residential elements of the development.
The coffered ceiling system of construction was used by AAJ for the first time, in order to achieve large column-free spans. This may have also been the first building in Delhi with shopping alleys in the basement. The basement construction did not have a reinforced concrete raft or retaining walls, but rather used thick brick walls.
Half coffers were used at the edges so as to give an interesting profile to the building, as is evident in the photograph. The residential block has double height balconies, another interesting new feature for those times.

Diffused Sunlight Through Jaali
AAJ uses the jaali in this project as perforated walls diffusing the light. The outcome is a play of shadows on the ground. The jaali allows breeze to travel into the corridor and provides views to the adjoining courtyard.
